The flag was adopted on 24th of March in 1992, in the format-ratio of 1:2. The Adyge Nation forms together with the Cabardiners, the people of the Circassians. The flag of Adygea is derived directly from the flag of the Circassians. The flag shows a monochrome green base cloth with the symbolism of the Circassians in the middle, three arrows and twelve stars. These represent the twelve Circassian tribes that united in the 19th century. The arrows traditionally stand for brotherhood and courage and today also stand for community and unity.

The name "Agygeya," sometimes "Adygia", goes back to the people of the Adyge. The Adyge, also called Adygejer or Adyge, form together with the Kabardins the people of the Circassians.
