The flag of the Azores consits in two vertical stripes in blue an white. The reason may be in this that the followers of queen Maria adoped on 18th of October in 1830 on the Azores a blue-white flag which get later the new national flag of Portugal, until 1911. The Azores are named hawk-islands, too, because of this the bird-depiction is a hawk. The nine stars are standing for the nine islands constituting the Azores. The portugese coat of arms in the upper canton shows the political affiliation.
