The Bantustans (also called Homelands or Bantoetuislande) had been often wide splitted territories, which their roots partially had in old Bantu reservations from British colonial times, in which lived finally nearly one half of the Bantus of South Africa. In the seventies of the 20th century to the Bantustans was granted autonomy and to some of them even a kind of independence. They had been however an instrument of the politics of racial segregation. On the occasion of a new constitution on 1st of January in 1994 the racial segregation was abolished ultimately and the Bantustans were dissolved – even against several resistance of some Bantu.
